This is a journal of a woodworking beginner. A journal about growth, forging ideas and projects related to woodworking, DIY-projects, and some thoughts on the side.
This is for me and people that want to follow a road to start woodworking, DIY as well as problem fixing. Maybe even becoming a “maker“.
It’s about documenting projects from a woodworking beginners view, keeping a timeline of growth and archive of the projects I’ve done or helped with.
Briefly about my background in DIY and why woodworking
Over the years I have fixed or built things.
I’ve built very, very simple tables (or reused furniture), decks, fences, storage solutions, and many other things. Furthermore, I’ve worked on various house building and house renovation projects to get familiar with building processes and tools.
Here are images of some of my DIY projects:
But for a long time whenever I am in a hardware store, or at a wood supplier, I can’t help browsing through the stock of wood. I just love the smell, the colors, the textures, the grains, the varieties and the overall tactile experience of touching and then later working with wood. In those moments I come up with ideas or remember projects and pieces of furniture I’ve seen.
That led me to find out more about processes, techniques, tools in woodworking.
As I familiarised myself with the above mentioned, I discovered even more interesting projects or saw videos where I thought “How hard can it be (to make it yourself)?” or “I want to LEARN how to do this or use that tool!”.
So, therefore, I will start doing these projects and document them – from a semi-noob perspective – A journal a woodworking beginner.
Woodworking beginner challenges
Various major challenges I will have to overcome:
- Space: Right now I don’t have a large enough space ( a work shed or woodshop ) to do these projects.
- Tools & materials: The few tools I have are “entry level” at best. I have to find ways to get tools (even used) to complete certain projects. As a woodworking beginner, I have to get also familiar with these new tools and write down my experiences in this journal.
- Storage or if possible sale of those projects.
- (Re-)learning publishing tools so that people get the most out of it
I will address these points in future posts more, writing what’s the situation in this journal. How to do or did I tackle them and what have I learned.
I hope you find here some useful information and in the future inspiration.
And if you have tools or wood or other material to give away or know someone who does, or someone that can teach me about woodworking by a hands-on approach (Maybe helping out on projects), let me know.
